What happens at the Great Labor Arts Exchange?

GLAE's 40 year long history is closely tied to the Labor Movement and creating art about all social justice struggles.

  • Music, poetry, dance, film and visual arts are all part of the experience. This year includes a PMN track of workshops with topics like "Writing Effective Political Songs" and "Bringing Singing back to the Picket Line”.
  • GLAE’s tradition of the Arts Exchange, scheduled in 1-2 hour segments throughout the gathering, allows attendees 5 minutes to present their art in front of the full group.
  • GLAE’s public concert is on Saturday, June 22, the final night of the weekend.  LHF selects the performers from the performers who play at the Arts Exchanges.
  • GLAE has a unique, fun, and welcoming culture of late night Open Mic singing and jamming at the bar.

Plus:

  • The Labor Heritage Foundation's annual Joe Hill Award presented to Si Kahn and Kathleen Farrell.  Si Kahn was featured in 2012 as a PMN Artist-in-Residence.
  • Annual Song/Poetry/Spoken Word Contest on Friday Night:  Deadline for submission is Thursday, June 20 at 5:00 p.m.  E-mail Elise Bryant for contest applications: <execdir@laborheritage.org>.

Future PMN Gatherings

PMN is not organizing its own separate Summer Gathering in 2019, but we are exploring how we can pull our resources together for a Summer Gathering in 2020 (Read why here.)  The next scheduled PMN Gathering is currently being planned for New York City from January 24-26, 2020.

PMN members attending GLAE for their first time should bring their own ideas and contributions to the event with the understanding that, for the purposes of the 2019 GLAE, PMN members are working within the particular traditions of GLAE, which were developed parallel to PMN's traditions over the course of 40 years
