1. What happens at the Great Labor Arts Exchange?

GLAE's 40 year long history is closely tied to the Labor Movement and creating art about all social justice struggles.

  • Music, poetry, dance, film and visual arts are all part of the experience. This year includes a PMN track of workshops with topics like "Perspectives on Effective Political Songwriting" and "Bringing Singing back to the Picket Line”.
  • GLAE’s tradition of the Arts Exchange, scheduled in 1-2 hour segments throughout the gathering, allows attendees 5 minutes to present their art in front of the full group.
  • GLAE’s public concert is on Saturday, June 22, the final night of the weekend.  LHF selects the performers from the performers who play at the Arts Exchanges.
  • GLAE has a unique, fun, and welcoming culture of late night Open Mic singing and jamming at the bar.

Plus:

  • The Labor Heritage Foundation's annual Joe Hill Award presented to Si Kahn and Kathleen Farrell.  Si Kahn was featured in 2012 as a PMN Artist-in-Residence.

    6. Future PMN Gatherings

PMN members attending GLAE for their first time should bring their own ideas and contributions to the event with the understanding that, for the purposes of the 2019 GLAE, PMN members are working within the particular traditions of GLAE, which were developed parallel to PMN's traditions over the course of 40 years
