Saturday-Sunday, January 25-26, 2014

Click here for a map of the school: Renaissance Charter School

Important Note: The School is north of 37th St., not the south as shown on the Google map.

Public transit:

By subway: Take the No. 7 (Flushing Line) local train to 82nd Street in Jackson Heights, Queens. You will be at the corner of 82nd Street and Roosevelt Avenue. Walk north one long block to 37th Avenue. Cross 37th Avenue, turn left, and walk one short block to 81st Street. Turn right onto 81st Street and walk a few feet to the school entrance, which is 3559 81st Street. (On weekends, all No. 7 trains are locals.)

Warning! There is a chance that the No. 7 train will not be running from Manhattan to Queens on the Saturday and Sunday of the Winter Gathering. If that happens, you will need to take the N or Q train to Queensborough Plaza and change there to No. 7. You can get the N or Q train at Times Square, Herald Square, Union Square and numerous other places in Manhattan. Consult www.mta.info for updated transit information.

By bus from Manhattan: Take the Q32 bus from the Penn Station area (West 32nd Street between 6th and 7th Avenues) to 81st Street and 37th Avenue in Jackson Heights, Queens. You can also get on the Q32 along Madison Avenue from East 32nd Street to East 59th Street, and along East 59th Street from Madison Avenue to 2nd Avenue in Manhattan before it crosses the East River into Queens. The bus stops directly in front of the school.

From the airports:

LaGuardia Airport is the best choice. The Q33 bus from LaGuardia stops at 82nd Street and 37th Avenue, one short block from the Renaissance Charter School. You can also take a cab. Tip 15%.

From JFK: Take the AirTrain monorail to Jamaica station. Follow signs to the E subway line. Take the E train towards Manhattan to the Jackson Heights/Roosevelt Ave. stop. You will be at the intersection where 74th St., Broadway and Roosevelt Avenue converge. Walk east on Roosevelt. You are going the right way if the next street you come to is 75th St. Keep walking past numbered streets to 81st St., a total of seven blocks. Make a left on 81st St. and go half a block. The school will be on your right. This is about a half-mile walk. If you are heavily laden, you can take a cab. Tip 15%.

From Port Authority Bus Terminal: Go into the 8th Avenue subway inside the terminal and walk through the underground tunnel to the Times Square subway station. From there you can get the No. 7 (Flushing Line) local train to Jackson Heights, Queens. Follow the subway directions above.

From Grand Central Terminal: Go into the subway and take the No. 7 (Flushing Line) local train to Jackson Heights, Queens. Follow the subway directions above.

From Penn Station: Go into the 7th Avenue subway. Take any northbound train one stop to Times Square and change for the No. 7 (Flushing Line) local train to Queens. Or else take the Q32 bus directly to Jackson Heights. See “by bus from Manhattan” directions above.

By Long Island Railroad: Get off at the Woodside station. Go upstairs to the subway (elevated railway) and take the No. 7 (Flushing Line) local train east towards Flushing. Get off at 82nd Street in Jackson Heights. Or else go downstairs to the corner of 61st Street and Roosevelt Avenue and get an eastbound Q32 bus to Jackson Heights. Get off directly in front of the school.
The basic NYC transit fare is $2.50 per ride. You will need to purchase a Metrocard to use the subway system. There are various discounts available if you want more than a single ride. Metrocards work on buses, too. You can also pay with exact change, meaning coins only. Quarters, dimes, and nickels all work, as do one dollar coins, but half dollars and pennies do not. If you use a Metrocard, you can transfer between the bus and the subway, or between two bus lines, for free.

For additional NYC transit information, visit www.mta.info or, within New York City, call 511.

DRIVING

Welcome to the New York driving experience! The Saturday and Sunday events of the 2014 PMN Winter Gathering will take place at the Renaissance Charter School (TRCS) in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York City. TRCS is close to the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway or BQE / I-278. When driving follow the signs for I-278, but when asking direction ask for the BQE.

To add to the confusion. Both Brooklyn and Queens are physically located on Long Island, but are boroughs of New York City. However, when people say “Long Island” they usually mean just the suburbs, Nassau and Suffolk Counties. And when they say “New York City” they sometimes mean just Manhattan. If asking directions, be sure to specify Queens.

Getting to the BQE from out of town. From the north, take the Triborough Bridge to Queens (or Long Island). When you get off the bridge go straight ahead onto the highway and follow the signs for the BQE south or I-278 west towards Brooklyn. From the south or west, take the Goethals Bridge into Staten Island. When you get off the bridge, go onto the Staten Island Expressway, which happens to be I-278 east. Take I-278 through Staten Island and across the Verrazano Narrows Bridge into Brooklyn. Follow the signs for the BQE north or I-278 east towards Queens. The toll-free Kosciuszko Bridge on the BQE separates the two boroughs. On the north (east) side of the bridge you are in Queens; on the south (west) side of the bridge you are in Brooklyn.

To the Renaissance Charter School. The school is located at 3559 81st Street, between 35th and 37th Avenues. (There is no 36th Avenue there). Take the BQE/I-278 to the Northern Boulevard exit in Queens. Once on Northern Boulevard, go east (away from Manhattan, towards the higher number streets) a little over 1/2 mile to 82nd Street. Turn right onto 82nd Street and go 3 long blocks to 37th Avenue. Turn right on 37th Avenue and go 1 short block to 81st Street. Turn right on 81st Street. The school will be the first building on your right. It has red doors. Look for parking. If you can’t find any, there is a commercial parking garage (82nd Street Park) one block east on 82nd Street just before 37th Avenue. Circle around the block to your right to get to it. The entrance will be on your left just before 37th Avenue.

For New Yorkers coming from Manhattan. If you don’t want to or don’t need to take the BQE, take the Queensborough (59th Street) Bridge lower level into Queens. Follow the signs for Northern Boulevard. Take Northern Boulevard to 82nd Street, turn right, and follow the directions above.
